My business partner, Louise Heasman, and I founded The Athena Network at the beginning of January 2006.  Between us, over 8 years, we have set up 80 networking groups and we now have had a massive demand for more groups to be set up in areas we don't currently have one.  The truth is that as much as we enjoy launching new groups and meeting the demand of women in business we also made a commitment to ourselves to maintain a perfect life/work balance.  That just wouldn't be possible with over 27 groups to manage between us!

Let me back up a bit with our story and give you a little more background;

Following a career in Barclays Louise moved to Business Network International (BNI) as Director of London and Birmingham, she successfully helped to set up and support over 40 networking groups in London and Birmingham.

Louise provided invaluable experience in helping a range of professionals and business owners discover the power of ‘word of mouth’ marketing.  What that simply means is that she taught them to network effectively and as a consequence their business became more profitable (it becomes simple when you understand the terminology).

After five years with BNI, Louise set up a highly successful aromatherapy practice in Harley Street. Running the practice alongside her BNI work, she found that the two businesses dovetailed perfectly. 

A watershed came for Louise when she had her first daughter and relocated to Hertfordshire. Knowing from experience that personal recommendation is one of the best ways to find new business, she naturally wanted to join business networks in her area to support her business

But how?  The goal posts had moved.   With a new baby to consider breakfast meetings were no longer viable.  So how are women to find support, contacts and a network to fit in with their hectic work and home demands?   A light bulb went on.  Louise produced a unique and workable model for business networking that would fit in with women’s business needs and lifestyles.  In January 2005 she founded a networking organisation specifically for women that was an overnight success.

In the first year, 23 groups were set up in the Home Counties, bringing the total tally of networking groups Louise has personally founded to nearly 40.

Louise and I met at a networking lunch.  I had been working directly with business owners and their teams as a trainer, mentor and coach and worked started working with Louise on a training project for the members of her groups.  It was during this exciting time that we recognised how we could take women's networking to a new dimension.  At the beginning of January 2006 The Athena Network was established.

o Number of Members – You will know how many members you have in each group and in total.
o Number of Prospects – You will know how many prospective members you have and it will highlight where you need to target your prospecting. 
o Total Income – The spreadsheet calculates a running total of all income for each group.
o Total Costs – The spreadsheet will include the total cost of running your groups

How Much Work Is Involved?

Now, let me be clear at this point. Athena is not a ‘get-rich-quick’ scheme. However, it does offer really great levels of earnings and fantastic levels of pride and fulfillment – but you do need to put in work!

However, because the groups only meet once a month, and because the groups grow by word of mouth the amount of work needed is genuinely part-time.

It takes 10 hours per group per month to set and support a group until it reaches it’s optimum size of 25 members. Once a group reaches this point, it becomes ‘low maintenance’ and will take only 1-2 hours per group, per month to support, plus additional time if you decide to visit the group.

It is really down to you how you run your groups and when you want to devote time to it. Louise, for instance, works a few hours a day and I only work 4 days a week ... remember we have 27 groups though. 

As the majority of our members are affected by school holidays we recognise that it is more effective to have a large regional meeting in August and December which means it truly is a business that you can fit around your family and you can take every school holiday off.
